Santa Margarita, CA—KOA [7.16.11]

This morning Brian left us, driven away by the shuttle bus that brought him to the airport. We’ve had such a wonderful 2-1/2 weeks with him it was truly a gift that he was able to take that much time away from work. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that solo parenting for the next 3 weeks will be OK, but I know I will miss him terribly because road tripping with him is much better than road tripping without him.

We left L.A. by noon in the middle of what many people called “Car-maggedon”. The 405 Freeway is closed this weekend for major re-construction. Since we were on the west side of 405 traveling north, we escaped via 101 and drove north, with the Sierra Madre Mountains to the east of us.

We landed at our first KOA of the trip in Santa Margarita around 4:00 pm.

We pitched out tent and the kids immediately went to the pool to swim after our car ride. After dinner they bounced around on the “jumping pillow”...

... and then we watched TRON on the inflatable movie screen eating freshly popped popcorn! These are amenities we don’t see at our beloved state and national parks.
