Pioneer Day + Powwow [7.25.11]

Today is Pioneer Day, a state holiday in Utah. It celebrates the day, in 1847, when Brigham Young and a company of Mormon Pioneers entered the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. We went to the parade in the morning and sat with some of Mary Ann’s friends.

The floats were FANTASTIC!

I always wondered what Santa did in the summer!

So... the parade was a bit longer than we are used to...

We walked a few blocks to Liberty Park and went to a Powwow.

The Grand Entrance was mesmerizing... the drumming... the clothing... everything was very powerful.

Next came the all-tribal dance. Everyone was invited to participate, so I had to try it!

And, of course, a bit of SHOPPING had to happen. The girls got feather hair extensions.

We couldn’t resist cowboy hats...

... and hanging with the Prez.

This evening we enjoyed a visit with Mary Ann’s dear friend Maryam (originally from Iran but now living in Salt Lake). She wrote the girls’ names in Farsi and made us laugh a lot!
